Top students may assume that because they have worked hard to acquire a high grade point average they will quickly land their dream job at their dream company. In today’s IT job market, however, the student that looks best to the prospective employer is the student that, in addition to good grades, can add hands-on experience in a work setting to his/her resume. Typically, an internship will involve the student in projects related to web design and services, hardware and networking, programming, and any other technical services a business may require. Classroom work is obviously necessary, but to actually put that classroom knowledge together with the day to day workings of a busy IT department is invaluable in creating a well rounded job applicant. The student that has worked in a company’s IT department as an intern, and has been an asset, will naturally be considered above other applicants no matter the other’s qualifications. Today’s wisest students will begin to shop early in their college careers for the companies that will offer them this opportunity to excel not only in school, but also in the art of finding a long term job in their chosen field of Information Technology.

Marketing Internship

Marketing students are involved in an exciting industry that has many facets to learn about. Each facet alone is worthy of expertise that will be best acquired in a hands-on setting, making internship offerings extremely valuable. For students interested in learning the industry inside out, seeking and applying for a Marketing Internship should be high on their list of career-goal priorities.

An example of just one phase of skills required in a marketing career is advertising. To produce advertising that will increase awareness of a company and/or its product is an important element of marketing. Within that element alone is potential for artistic creativity, graphic design, formatting, design concepts, the pros and cons of various media, and many other talents that will need to be developed. Though this is but one aspect of a marketing professional’s whole package, it is easy to understand how working alongside those with experience could be a time saving career move that tips the scales in favor of the student that is talented and motivated enough to pursue such an opportunity. Additionally, the opportunity to learn skills, shortcuts, and techniques – and then to test them in the real marketing world – can be a great confidence (and resume) builder for the novice, and ultimately result in landing a job they may be in competition for.

The ability to produce effective advertising is only one area of the multi-faceted field of marketing. Even the type of advertising will depend on the company and its product. Many different types of companies offer marketing internships. Having interns is a popular way for corporations to discover new talent and to produce employees with the targeted talents that best suit their industry. Often, in this setting, mentors can also learn from interns with their fresh point of view, inspiring a new energy that will take creativity in unexpected directions.

Marketing is a competitive and demanding field. For the student driven to land a job and begin their career, a Marketing Internship could very well be their shortcut to success.

Summer Internships

Many students see summertime as a time to relax, party, and just do whatever they want to do. This is understandable considering the amount of work and dedication that is required to keep up a good grade point average in college.

There is another way to look at summer vacation, though. Taking time off might be nice, but it doesn’t help with building a future. If a student has the opportunity to enhance his/her education by working in the field they have been training for in school, wouldn’t they be prudent to take it? The whole point of gaining an education, after all, is to enable the student to acquire a comfortable livelihood in their chosen occupation. A summer internship is a way to give a boost up toward achieving that goal.

Many companies look for interns to join their staff for twelve weeks during the summer months. This is a good way for a business to assess a pool of potential future employees in a manner that is supportive yet noncommittal. Interns are given real work to do and often have the opportunity to attend workshops and classes within the company, helping them to target skills needed to support that particular company’s needs. The students that are energetic, motivated, and have the skills required to accomplish the tasks at hand, will in all likelihood be asked to come back to join the company’s work force once they have finished their education, or even to stay on once their internship is completed.

From the student’s standpoint, finding a good summer internship is going to be a positive experience in many ways. A chance to work in their chosen occupation will either reinforce or change their mind about their academic choices. If an intern finds that actually working in that line of work is a good fit for them they will want to continue their studies as before, and if not, they will know to change their course. Another good thing about hands-on working with the knowledge they have acquired is that it will sharpen their understanding of the subject and give an added dimension to their knowledge base. Possibly, an intern may learn that they need to add certain skills before they will be ready for a long term position in a company of their choosing. A summer internship is full of possibilities and will definitely enhance a resume for future employment opportunities.
